Box truck insurance in Texas: what it costs and what you need
Weight classes, DOT requirements, cargo coverage, and why a truck that stays near McAllen is priced differently from one that runs to Dallas.

- A box truck rated at 10,001 pounds or more that crosses state lines is a commercial motor vehicle under federal rules. That means a USDOT number and federal minimum liability.
- A brand new operation with a fresh DOT number and no loss history pays for that. It improves after the first and second year of clean operation.
- Cargo coverage for what you haul is a separate policy with its own limit and exclusions, and on a new operation the insurance can cost more per month than the truck payment.
Box trucks sit in an awkward middle. They are too large for a personal policy and too small for many trucking programs. The rules change with the weight, what you haul and how far you go. You need liability, coverage on the truck itself, and cargo coverage. What it costs depends mostly on your radius, your drivers and how long you have been operating.
The weight line that matters
A truck rated at 10,001 pounds or more, used across state lines, is a commercial motor vehicle under federal rules (49 CFR 390.5). The rating is the gross vehicle weight rating, the maximum loaded weight the maker sets for the truck. Above that line you need a USDOT number and federal minimum liability.
Most 16 to 26 foot box trucks sit above it. Below it, and staying entirely inside Texas, the rules are lighter. Insurers still rate the truck as commercial. See how DOT numbers, authority and filings fit together.
What box truck insurance usually includes
- Liability, the coverage for injury and damage you cause to others. The federal floor for general freight in trucks of 10,001 pounds or more is 750,000 dollars under 49 CFR 387.9. Most brokers and shippers require 1,000,000
- Physical damage on the truck, priced on its value including the box
- Cargo coverage for what you are hauling. See how motor truck cargo coverage works.
- Non trucking liability, also called bobtail coverage, if you lease onto another carrier. It covers you when you drive with no load
- General liability, because loading and unloading is where a lot of people get hurt
What box truck insurance costs depends on
- Radius of operation, how far the truck travels from where it is parked. A truck that stays within 50 miles of McAllen prices very differently from one running to Dallas. See how radius is rated.
- Driver experience and driving records, which matter more than almost anything else
- Cargo type. Electronics and produce price differently from furniture
- Truck value and age
- Claims history, including cargo claims
- Whether you have a DOT number and how long it has been active
New authority is expensive
A brand new operation with a fresh DOT number and no loss history pays for that. Loss history is your record of past claims. The price improves after the first and second year of clean operation. If you are starting out, budget for it. Plan to shop it again at each renewal, because the improvement is real. See the checklist for a new operation.
Loading and unloading
Most cargo claims we see are not crashes on the road. They are damage during loading, freight that was not tied down right, and temperature failures. Photograph loads. Tie them down properly. Keep the bills of lading, the paperwork that lists what you picked up. Documentation is what gets a cargo claim paid.

Common follow-up questions
Do I need a CDL for a box truck?
Generally not under 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, and without hazardous materials. The insurance rules apply whether or not a CDL does.
Does my policy cover the cargo automatically?
No. Motor truck cargo is a separate coverage with its own limit and exclusions. Check the exclusions carefully for what you haul.
Can I insure a box truck on a personal policy?
No. Personal auto policies exclude trucks of this type and use.
